How to Prepare for Your Photo
Government biometric standards are strict. Follow these tips to ensure a quick, easy, and approved session.
- Clothing: Avoid white shirts if possible (though we’ll make it work if you are wearing one). Don’t wear turtlenecks or clothing that hides the neck, as governments require a clear outline of your face.
- Glasses: Even though some specifications allow eyeglasses, we will ask you to remove them. The risk of glare causing a rejection is simply too high.
- Hair & Headwear: Your face must be fully visible with no hair obscuring your eyes. No hair clips, pins, or hats. Religious head coverings are perfectly fine as long as the entire face is visible (baseball caps do not count!).
- Expression: You cannot smile for a passport photo. If you are having a great day, make sure you practice sadness before you come in! You must maintain a neutral expression with a closed mouth.
- Babies: The rules apply to infants as well, and their eyes must be completely open for the photo.
- International Specs: If you require identification photos for a country other than Canada, please bring up-to-date documentation showing the photo requirements if you have it.
Common Questions
Do I need to make an appointment for passport photos?
No appointment is necessary! Just walk in during our regular business hours, and we will have your photos taken and printed in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Can I have a digital copy of my photo?
Absolutely. For an additional $5.00, we can email you a high-resolution digital copy of your photo perfectly cropped to the required specifications.
I need more than 2 photos… will I be charged double?
Not at all! After the initial $26.55 for the first set, each additional set of 2 printed photos is only $5.00.
Do babies need their own passport photos?
Yes, infants and toddlers must have their own individual passport photos. We are highly experienced in photographing babies, though it can take a few extra minutes to ensure their eyes are open and they are looking at the camera.
What if I need a different coloured background for my photo?
Different countries and specific visas sometimes require red, blue, or grey backgrounds instead of standard white. We can accommodate specific background color requests for international requirements.
Why can’t I smile for my photo?
Modern passports use biometric facial recognition technology. A smile changes the shape of your cheeks and jawline, which causes border security computers to reject the photo. A perfectly neutral expression with a closed mouth is required globally.
“There are no bad pictures; that’s just how your face looks sometimes.”
